The Short Answer

Video analytics for existing cameras is software that reads the video your current cameras already produce and adds detection, alerting and search on top of it. If a camera is IP based and streams over ONVIF or RTSP, which covers most business cameras installed in the last decade, no hardware needs to change. The analytics platform subscribes to the stream, runs models on it in the cloud or at the edge, and sends events where your team already works.

The reason this matters commercially is that the camera is rarely the weak part of a system. Most sites have perfectly serviceable cameras recording to a box nobody opens until something goes wrong. What is missing is the layer that notices. Buying that layer as software costs a per-camera subscription. Buying it as a new camera system costs the cameras, the installation labor, the licenses and the downtime, and it throws away equipment that was doing its job.

The honest exception is image quality. AI cannot recover detail the sensor never captured. A camera that is too low resolution, badly aimed, or pointed into glare will produce weak analytics no matter whose software reads it. That is a lens and placement problem, and it is worth fixing on the handful of cameras where it applies rather than replacing the estate.

What "ONVIF Compatible" Actually Means Before You Buy

ONVIF is not one standard, it is a set of profiles, and a spec sheet that says only "ONVIF" tells you very little. This is the part most retrofit evaluations get wrong, so it is worth thirty seconds. Profiles below are as published by ONVIF in September 2026.

Profile M Metadata and events for analytics applications: analytics configuration, metadata streaming, object classification, and event interfaces for object counting, faces and license plates. The analytics profile. Note it applies to clients as well as devices, so your VMS or software has to conform too, not just the camera.
Profile G Recording and retrieval of video on the device or on a recorder. Relevant if you want analytics to reach back into recorded footage rather than only live streams.
Profile Q Out of the box device discovery and configuration. Deprecated since April 1, 2022. If a quote leans on Profile Q, the documentation behind it is stale.

Two questions settle most compatibility arguments: which ONVIF profile does the device conform to, and can it hand over an RTSP URL. Retrofit Software Against Replacing the Camera System

The comparison that actually decides this is not feature by feature, it is what each path costs and what it disrupts. Figures below are the ranges we see in US commercial deployments and the prices vendors publish themselves.

A useful pattern in practice: retrofit the estate, replace the exceptions. Most sites find five to ten percent of cameras are badly enough placed or too low resolution to be worth swapping, and the rest are fine. Where This Fits, And Where It Does Not

Good fit

  • A camera estate that already works and records, but nobody watches it live.
  • Multiple sites with different camera brands, where a standards-based layer unifies them.
  • Teams that were quoted a full rip and replace and want to test the cheaper path first.
  • Buildings where cabling or landlord approval makes new installs slow or impossible.
  • Anyone who wants to search footage by description instead of scrubbing timelines.

Poor fit, and we will say so

  • Cameras with no IP stream and no encoder in the budget.
  • Scenes too dark or too low resolution for any model to classify reliably.
  • Closed cloud camera platforms that refuse to expose a stream to third parties.
  • Buyers who need access control and video from one vendor on one contract.
  • Air-gapped sites that cannot send any video off the local network.

Can I add AI to my existing security cameras?

Usually yes. If a camera is IP based and streams over ONVIF or RTSP, analytics software can pull that stream and run detection on it without touching the camera. That covers the large majority of business cameras installed in the last decade. The camera keeps recording to whatever it records to now, and the analytics layer reads a parallel stream.

Do I need to replace my cameras to get AI video analytics?

No, in most cases. AI detection runs on the video, not inside the camera, so image quality and placement matter far more than the age of the hardware. Replacement is only genuinely required when a camera cannot produce an IP stream at all, or when it is pointed somewhere that no model could read, such as a scene lit only by headlights.

What AI tools support VMS integration?

Look for software that conforms to ONVIF Profile M as a client, because Profile M is the ONVIF profile that defines metadata and events for analytics applications. A Profile M client can receive and configure analytics metadata from conformant devices. Tools that only read RTSP still work, but they run alongside the VMS rather than feeding results back into it. Will AI video analytics work with old analog CCTV cameras?

Only through an encoder. Analog cameras produce no IP stream, so they need a video encoder or a hybrid recorder that converts the feed to RTSP first. Once that stream exists, analytics treats it like any other camera. The practical limit is usually resolution, since older analog runs at a level where small objects at distance are hard to classify reliably.

How much does it cost to add AI to existing security cameras?

The cost is a per-camera software subscription rather than hardware. Analytics add-ons from incumbent vendors commonly run 3 to 15 dollars per camera per month, while full cloud platforms that include recording and search run higher. How do I add real-time AI analytics to an existing VMS or NVR without a forklift upgrade?

Point the analytics platform at the camera streams rather than at the recorder. The NVR keeps its recording and retention job, the analytics layer subscribes to the same RTSP or ONVIF streams, and alerts route to email, SMS or a webhook. Nothing in the recording path changes, which is what keeps it from becoming a forklift upgrade.

Does adding analytics software void my camera warranty?

No. Reading an RTSP or ONVIF stream is a normal, documented use of the camera and requires no firmware modification. Warranty questions arise when third-party firmware is flashed onto a device, which is a different operation entirely. Check your own vendor terms, but stream subscription is the interface these cameras were built to expose.

Is ONVIF conformance enough to guarantee my cameras will work?

Not on its own, because ONVIF is a family of profiles rather than one standard. Profile S covers video streaming and is being deprecated, with the final date for product conformance submissions set at March 31, 2027. Profile T covers modern streaming and Profile M covers analytics metadata. Ask which profile a device conforms to, not just whether it is ONVIF.
