Omnilert Gun Detect is visual firearm detection software that runs on cameras you already own and hands verified alerts into an emergency response workflow. The interesting thing about Omnilert is what it does not publish: there is no accuracy percentage anywhere on its gun detection pages. This review works only from Omnilert's own materials and the public record, explains what its credentials actually certify, and says plainly where a competing product fits better. Omnilert Gun Detect is AI software that watches live feeds from existing IP security cameras and flags a visible firearm, handguns and long guns alike, before shots are fired. Omnilert says the system "operates on standard video feeds" and that organizations can add it "without replacing cameras or installing new hardware." When the model flags a gun, the detection is passed either to the customer's own security operations center or to one of Omnilert's monitoring centers for human verification, and from there it can trigger lockdowns, mass notification, and staff or law enforcement alerts.

What separates Omnilert from the rest of the category is its origin. Omnilert started as a mass notification company, so the response half of the chain, the part that actually gets people moving, is the mature product and gun detection was bolted onto it. Its own published figures are about speed, not accuracy: "in fractions of a second, our AI identifies a gun threat" and "sub-second detection of potential gun threats." Omnilert received full DHS SAFETY Act Designation for its AI gun detection on March 27, 2025, placing it on the Approved Technologies List, one of only two vendors in this category with that protection. It publishes no per-camera price.

How Omnilert Gun Detection Works

The detection half is the same visual approach every camera-based vendor uses. The response half is where Omnilert's mass notification heritage shows.

Existing cameras, no swap

Omnilert states it works with "most existing IP-based security cameras" and runs on standard video feeds, so there is no camera replacement. It lists integrations with Axis, Genetec, Hirsch, and central station partners, which matters because the alert has to land somewhere your team already watches.

The model looks for a gun near a body

Omnilert says its AI searches for handguns and long guns in proximity to the body, reads multiple frames in sequence to build a track, and weighs the relationship of the gun to the hand, arm, and body before calling it a threat. Phones and tools are trained as inert objects to hold false positives down.

A human confirms the image

Omnilert says the detection plus video context is shared with the customer's security operations center or with one of its five-diamond-certified monitoring centers for real-time human verification. You can run this in-house or buy it as a service, which is the fork that decides your total cost.

Response fires automatically

This is the part Omnilert has done longest. A confirmed detection can trigger predefined workflows: mass emergency notification, door lockdowns, on-site security alerts, and dispatch. Buyers who already own an emergency notification problem get more out of Omnilert than buyers who only want detections in a dashboard.

What Omnilert Actually Publishes About Accuracy

Search for Omnilert accuracy and you will find confident percentages on reseller pages and roundup blogs. Go to Omnilert's own gun detection pages and there is no percentage at all. That gap is worth understanding before you sit in a demo, because two of Omnilert's real credentials get read as accuracy proof when they certify something else entirely.

Fewer than 5% of providers hold it. Five Diamond is a real and demanding credential, but it certifies the people and the central station, not the detection model. It tells you the humans on the other end are trained and audited. It tells you nothing about how often the AI sees a gun.
"DHS approved it, so DHS validated the accuracy" Omnilert received full SAFETY Act Designation from DHS on March 27, 2025 and was added to the Approved Technologies List. The SAFETY Act is a liability protection framework for anti-terrorism technologies created after 2001. This is genuinely valuable and only two vendors in this category hold it (Omnilert and ZeroEyes). It caps liability exposure if the technology is deployed during a qualifying act. It is not a published performance benchmark, and procurement teams should treat it as risk transfer, not as a detection rate.
"It detects weapons on people" Omnilert detects visible firearms, handguns and long guns, in proximity to the body. It focuses "exclusively on identifying weapons rather than recognizing faces." Concealed firearms are not addressed anywhere in its product materials. No visible-light camera system detects a gun inside a bag, waistband, or coat. That is a physics limit shared by Omnilert, ZeroEyes, Actuate, Scylla, and us. If concealed carry is your threat model, you are shopping for entrance screening, not camera AI.

None of this is a knock on Omnilert. Declining to print a headline accuracy number is arguably the more honest position, because a single percentage from a controlled test tells a school district almost nothing about what will happen in a dim parking lot at 60 feet. ZeroEyes takes the same position and for the same reason. The problem is downstream: the internet fills the vacuum with numbers the vendor never claimed, and buyers then compare a fabricated Omnilert figure against a conditioned figure from a vendor that did publish one. We wrote up the same trap on Actuate weapons detection, where the famous 99% is conditioned on a gun brandished for five seconds, and on Scylla weapons detection, where the 96% comes from US Army field testing.

The practical move in an evaluation is to stop comparing marketing numbers and run the same footage through every finalist. Ask each vendor to process a week of your own recorded video, including your worst camera, and report detections and false alerts against a ground truth you control. Vendors that will not do this are telling you something.

Where Omnilert Is Strongest

The Response Chain, Not the Detector, Is the Product

Every vendor in this category can put a red box around a firearm. What varies is what happens in the next thirty seconds, and that is where the money and the risk actually sit. Omnilert describes a chain that runs from the camera identifying a firearm, to an alert reaching security within a few seconds, to monitoring staff verifying and initiating protocols shortly after. Because the company began in mass notification, the protocols on the far end are unusually complete: SMS and desktop alerts, public address, digital signage, door lockdown triggers, and dispatch.

For a school district, that completeness is often the whole purchase. The district does not have a staffed control room, so a detection with no response plan is a liability rather than a safeguard. Buying detection and notification from one vendor removes an integration project the district has no staff to run.

The flip side is that you pay for a response layer whether or not you need it. An enterprise with a 24/7 global security operations center already has notification, dispatch trees, and trained operators. For that buyer, the Omnilert value stack is partly redundant, and a detection layer that simply pushes events into the existing platform is cheaper and less disruptive.

The second consideration is scope. Omnilert Gun Detect is a firearm detector. If your actual list of problems includes after-hours intrusion, loitering at a loading bay, tailgating at a door, vehicle and plate events, and the ability to search months of footage for a description, a single-purpose detector leaves most of that unsolved. The curve in that last row is the single most useful thing a buyer can hold in their head. First, Omnilert and ZeroEyes hold SAFETY Act protection and we do not, which is a real procurement advantage in K-12 and public sector deals where liability language is scrutinized. Second, if a firearm on your property is the single risk that keeps you up at night and you have nobody to watch an alert queue, a monitored service is the better answer than any software subscription, ours included.
