Avigilon Alta Alternative Cloud Video Security Software Without the Cloud Connector Appliance

Avigilon Alta, formerly Ava and Openpath, is Motorola Solutions' cloud security suite. It is a serious platform. But bringing your existing third-party cameras into it requires an Alta Cloud Connector at every site. Surveillant does not. This page compares the two without pretending Alta has no advantages, because it has several.

Surveillant is an independent product. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a reseller of Motorola Solutions or Avigilon.

In short

Avigilon Alta Video supports third-party ONVIF Profile S cameras, but those cameras must connect through an Alta Cloud Connector, an on-site appliance that handles analytics, local storage, and cloud connectivity. Only Avigilon's own cloud-native cameras go direct to the cloud. That means a genuinely serverless Alta deployment implies buying Avigilon cameras. Surveillant pulls ONVIF and RTSP streams directly with no appliance and no camera purchase. Alta is the better choice if you want video and access control from one vendor under one support contract, because Alta Access is a real product and we do not offer access control at all.

Surveillant vs Avigilon Alta: Honest Comparison

Verified against Avigilon's published product documentation in July 2026. Motorola Solutions does not publish Alta pricing, so cost is quote-based. Confirm current details with Avigilon before purchase.

Choose Avigilon Alta instead when

You want video and door access from one vendor, on one support contract, with one badge system. Alta Access came from Openpath and is a mature access control product. We do not compete with it and will not pretend otherwise. Alta is also the safer answer to a procurement team that weighs vendor size heavily, since Motorola Solutions is not going anywhere.

Choose Surveillant instead when

You already own cameras that work fine and do not want to install an appliance at every site to keep using them. Cloud Connectors are a per-site hardware cost, a per-site failure point, and a per-site install visit. If you have forty small locations, that is forty of each. Analytics as pure software avoids all three.

What the Cloud Connector Actually Changes

The connector is not a flaw in Alta's design. It is a deliberate trade, and it buys real things. It is just a trade many buyers do not price correctly during evaluation.

What the connector gives you

On-site storage that survives an internet outage, local analytics that do not depend on upload bandwidth, and a bridge for legacy cameras that could never reach a cloud on their own. These are genuine benefits, especially on sites with weak connectivity.

What it costs you

Hardware to buy, rack, power, and eventually replace, at every single location. A truck roll to install it. A device that can fail and take a site dark. Multiply by your site count before comparing the software line items.

The multi-site math

The connector model gets more expensive the more sites you have and the smaller each one is. A single large campus absorbs one appliance easily. Forty retail units absorb forty appliances badly.

The bandwidth reality

Appliance-free platforms shift work to your upload link. Budget roughly 1 to 4 Mbps per camera depending on resolution and how much you stream continuously. If a site cannot supply that, the connector model is genuinely better for that site.

Air-gapped and offline sites

If footage is not allowed to leave the building, or the site has no reliable internet, neither a pure cloud platform nor a connector-plus-cloud model is right. Keep an on-premise VMS there. We would rather say that than sell into a bad fit.

The honest summary

Connector for weak links and legacy fleets. Appliance-free software for many sites with decent internet and modern ONVIF cameras. Most US multi-site buyers in 2026 are in the second category, which is why this comparison exists at all.

If you are comparing the whole cloud category rather than one vendor, start with our cloud video surveillance software overview, or read the cloud vs on-premise video surveillance guide before you commit either way. Buyers evaluating Alta usually also look at our Avigilon alternative page, which covers the on-premise Unity line rather than the Alta cloud suite.

FAQ

Avigilon Alta Alternative Questions

What is Avigilon Alta?

Avigilon Alta is Motorola Solutions' cloud-native security suite, formed from Ava Security's video platform and Openpath's access control. The suite includes Alta Video, Alta Access, Alta Protect monitoring, Alta Visitor, and Alta Mailroom. It sits alongside Avigilon Unity, which is the on-premise line.

Does Avigilon Alta work with third-party cameras?

Yes, with a condition. Alta Video supports third-party IP cameras compliant with ONVIF Profile S, but those cameras must be connected through an Alta Cloud Connector installed at the site. The connector performs analytics and provides local storage. Avigilon's own cloud-native cameras connect directly without one.

How much does Avigilon Alta cost?

Motorola Solutions does not publish Alta pricing. Buyers request a quote through Avigilon or an authorized dealer, and the price depends on camera count, retention, licensing tier, and which suite products you take. Factor in Cloud Connector hardware for each site running third-party cameras, since that is a separate capital cost from the software subscription.

What is the best Avigilon Alta alternative?

For teams that want cloud video analytics on existing cameras with no appliance, Surveillant, Spot AI, Coram AI, and Eagle Eye Networks are the platforms most often shortlisted. If access control matters as much as video, the honest answer is that few alternatives match Alta, and you may be better served staying with the suite.

Is Avigilon Alta the same as Ava Security?

Alta Video is the successor to Ava Security's video product. Motorola Solutions acquired Ava and Openpath, then rebranded and combined them into the Avigilon Alta suite. Existing Ava documentation and camera modes still surface under the Alta name, which is why you will see both terms in support articles.

Can I keep my Avigilon cameras and switch analytics platforms?

In most cases yes. Avigilon IP cameras that support ONVIF Profile S can stream to a third-party platform like Surveillant. Check whether your specific model is in ONVIF mode rather than a proprietary mode, since some cloud-native cameras ship configured to talk only to Alta. Test one camera before planning a migration.

Do I need a Cloud Connector with Surveillant?

No. Surveillant pulls ONVIF or RTSP streams from your cameras with no on-site appliance to buy, install, or replace. The trade-off is that you need enough upload bandwidth at each site, roughly 1 to 4 Mbps per camera. On sites with poor connectivity, a connector-based platform or a local NVR genuinely serves you better.
