Verkada Is No Longer a Verkada-Cameras-Only Platform

Nearly every comparison article still on page one says Verkada is a closed system that works only with Verkada hardware. That framing is a few years stale, and buyers are making shortlist decisions on it.

Verkada announced on February 13, 2025 that Command Connector "is now officially recognized as an Open Network Video Interface Forum (ONVIF) Profile S conformant client," and that it "can also ingest feeds from RTSP-compatible cameras that are not ONVIF Profile S conformant." Since then the third-party path has kept filling in: audio on Command Connector channels reached all Command organizations in February 2026, and trajectory analysis, which drives line-crossing and loitering detection, rolled out to all organizations on February 26, 2026.

So the old open-versus-closed test no longer separates these two. What still separates them is the tier of analytics a third-party channel receives. Verkada's newest capabilities, including AI-Powered Deterrence released in public beta in February 2026, require Verkada gen-2 or newer cameras plus specific audio hardware. A third-party ONVIF channel gets a real but reduced feature set. Spot AI does not draw that line as sharply, because its own cameras are positioned as optional rather than as the tier that unlocks the software.

The practical takeaway for a buyer: do not shortlist or reject Verkada on camera compatibility. Shortlist on the specific analytics you need, then confirm in writing which of them run on a non-Verkada channel.
